The letter V in Eisenhower's Royal QDL sat exactly five degrees off-vertical. Not upright like proper military posture, but leaning forward. Charging ahead like the invasion it would help launch. Mechanical imperfection that became superstition. That became a talisman of victory.

Hartford, Connecticut. 1941. Henry O'Malley bent over that same model typewriter, fingers finding mechanical flaws microscopic to ordinary eyes. Three years later, those same fingers in Nazi France.

Eisenhower wouldn't sign the order until someone fixed his machine. History records the invasion. The file records what made it possible. I sent him there. A 4-F factory worker with asthma crawled across occupied France to make D-Day happen. He never got a medal. He got a bus ticket home.

Some flaws do the job better than the fix would.

The V-key was never corrected after the invasion. Every repair on that machine through three years of postwar shop work, and O'Malley never touched the V.
